Inevitably, the next question after, "do you know of any good photographers?" is "but which one is the best?"
Good and best are both highly subjective terms. My opinion matters much less than the bride's. The photographers are going to be capturing images, and consequently memories, of her day not mine. That is why I always give several names of photographers I think will be a good match for the couple and encourage them to browse through portfolios and meet with the photographers.
A photographer's portfolio - and their work is readily available on their websites and typically also on Facebook - is a great place to start. Many brides instantly "connect" with their photographer through the work. They just get a sense that this particular photographer captures weddings in a way they want their wedding captured. The differences can be remarkably subtle to someone who is not shopping for a photographer, but glaringly obvious to a bride with a more critical eye. Trust your instincts.
Once you have identified several portfolios that grab your attention, set up meetings with the photographers to see if their personalities match your needs and expectations. In my years of officiating, I have only met one photographer who thoroughly irritated me. I understand he is not in the business anymore. I can see why.
If you hire a photographer to shoot your wedding from the moment you start dressing right through the reception, you are going to be spending many hours with this individual. Make sure it is someone both pleasant and confident. They have to be able to direct people diplomatically, but firmly, in order to take all of the pictures you want. They should be both personable and professional. This is a business arrangement, so you should feel you are comfortably in the hands of a professional and an artist.
So who is the best photographer? The one with the portfolio you think is out of this world, has a personality you can get along with, and has professional integrity you respect.
